Freezing START: Russia will equip missile defense in Kaliningrad , against NATO nuclear deployment in Poland.
Europe Security News.- Iskander Missile system.
In Kaliningrad, Moscow will deploy ballistic missiles and also short range tactic missiles in order to protect the Russian territory from any threat from the planned deployment of NATO/U.S. missiles in Poland and other european countries. The NATO forces and the U.S. Administration wants to protect Europe from any missile attacks from “rogue” nations, like Iran.
Russia see this as a threat, according to recent statements of President Dmitry Medvedev. As another reaction to the NATO plans, Moscow may terminate and withdraw from the START disarmament Treaty, if Russia and the U.S. do not agree on EUROPRO.
EUROPRO is the name of the defense project to be deployed by NATO in Poland.
About the subject, the Russian permanent representative to NATO Dmitry Rogozin said to RIA Novosti that Russia will not allow a missile arms race between the U.S. and Russia. Rogozin added that “the russian response to the expansion of U.S. missile defense system is asymmetric and do not require additional costs, and all included in the state program of arms “.
Medvedev ordered negotiators to continue consultations with the U.S. on missile defense, while Washington has passed the “point of no return,” said Rogozin.
“The final architecture of the U.S. missile defense – and it is an American defense system, not NATO´s, by and large, NATO here is only acting as a screen – will be formulated in May next year at the summit of the North Atlantic Alliance NATO in Chicago. We have a direct responsibility to continue consultations with U.S. and NATO partners for as long as the U.S. does not pass the “point of no return” in this matter, “- said Rogozin.
The russsian newspaper Izvestia stated today that Russia received the american confirmation that they will not provide Russia with any legal guarantees for the new defense, that is why now Medvedev made his statement.
However, western analysts stated to CNN that Medvedev´s move is linked to the next russian general elections. Any nationalist act is well received by the voters, according to the CNN analysts.
Meanwhile, NATO spokesman said the alliance will carefully examine the statement of the President of Russia on missile defense.
Today President Medvedev announced such measures that will be taken in response to the deployment of U.S. missile defense system in Europe.
Medvedev said Russia would begin operating an early-warning radar in Kaliningrad, an enclave separated from the rest of the country and surrounded by NATO states , to improve protection of its nuclear missile installations and deploy long-range weapons able to overcome an anti-missile shield.
“I have given the armed forces the task of developing measures providing, if necessary, for the destruction of missile defense information and guidance system components,” Medvedev said in a recorded televised address.
If the above steps are not enough, Russia will deploy in the west and south of its territory shock modern weapons systems that provide fire destruction of the European component of missile defense.
In particular they will deploy “Iskander” missiles in the Kaliningrad region.
Medvedev added that Moscow reserves the right to refuse further disarmament and arms control. The President also said that Russia may withdraw from the START treaty.
– Given the inextricable link between strategic offensive and defensive weapons, there may be reason for us to exit from the START Treaty – the president said.
If the U.S. also establish missile systems in Romania, Russia could also place Missiles in Moldavia.
