Spain´s Iberia announced strike every Friday and Monday between April and July.
Planes of Spanish airline Iberia
The Spanish national airline Iberia has announced on Friday the cancellation of 250 flights schedules for the 13th and 16th of April. This is a result of the latest round of strikes called by the Spanish pilots’ union SEPLA.
SPELA will strike every Friday and Monday between April 9th and July 20th in protest for the launch of Iberia’s low cost airline “Iberia Express.”
The pilots say that the new low cost airline Iberia Express, which began operation in the last Sunday of March, will seriously change the pilots working conditions and their collective agreement with IBERIA.
Iberia Express is expected to take on all of Iberia’s short and medium haul flights over the coming 3-4 years.
Talks with a government appointed mediator at the end of March, broke down amid accusations that Iberia was unwilling to make concessions.
A total of 122 international and internal flights have been cancelled for April 13th and a further 128 for the following Friday.
Iberia estimates the strikes will cause damages of 3 million euros ($3.92 million) per day.
Iberia’s Web page showed more than 150 flights were cancelled on Monday, including destinations within Spain, around Europe, and to Latin America.
Iberia´s pilot union say 8,000 jobs will be lost as Iberia moves a few dozen airplanes to the low-cost subsidiary from its full-service airline.
Iberia say starting the new airline is the only way to make the loss-making Spanish unit profitable.
