ISTANBUL —  Turkey´s President Abdullah Gül signed a legislative bill on Friday that granted more authority to the national spy agency.

The intelligence bill, approved in Parliament  last week after Prime Minister Erdogan’s party won an indisputable victory in March local parliamentarian elections, allows that the National Intelligence Organization known as M.I.T.,  a series of intel activities like in special cases to have access to public and private information without court orders and to conduct foreign operations in coordination with the military.

The agency also receives broad immunity from prosecution.

Turkish government officials defended the legislation, saying to media that the bill would make the intelligence agency more efficient and protect personnel doing their duties. They said the legislation provided long overdue overhauls of a law that dates to 1984.
